Long-Pulsed 694 nm Ruby Laser

The ruby laser is the oldest laser used for hair removal. It is best for patients with dark hair and fair skin. It is not recommended for patients with dark skin or anyone recently exposed to the sun.

For more than 30 years, dermatologists have used ruby lasers to treat tattoos. In Japan, the Toshiba normal-mode ruby laser has been used to treat tattoos and pigmented lesions for over ten years. Dr. L. Goldman developed the first ruby laser in the 1960s. A flashlamp-pumped, normal-mode ruby laser was primarily used to remove tattoos and pigmented skin lesions. Dr. Rox Anderson of Harvard Medical School revolutionized the ruby laser for hair removal. He created the ruby laser for hair removal with the same wavelength and similar fluences, pulse widths, and spot sizes as these older ruby laser models.

This is an old-fashioned type of laser that no one uses with other available options.

800 nm Diode Laser

Like the Alexandrite laser, this also produces a list in the center of the melanin absorption spectrum. It has a greater depth of penetration than the two earlier lasers. This can be used for darker skin but is still not the preferred choice.

High energy delivery into the skin is critical to successful diode laser hair removal. This energy is selectively absorbed by the melanin surrounding the hair follicle and has no effect on the surrounding tissue.

This laser utilizes a single wavelength of light with a high rate of abruption in melanin. When melanin heats up, it destroys the root and reduces blood flow to the follicle, effectively stopping hair growth. High-quality laser hair removal machines use refrigeration contact cooling to protect the skin’s surface, making the treatment more comfortable and pain-free for patients. Diode lasers produce high frequency, low fluence pulses that are safe for all skin types to use.

This is the laser with the deepest penetration level. This is the preferred laser for dark skin because of fewer side effects.
